Default Scary Sound on Startup

Hey again. Sometimes when I start my car it makes an awful sound on ignition. Like when you try to start a car that is already started (if that makes sense). Until recently this had only happened twice and months apart. However, in the last week it has happened multiple times, although not every time. I only hold the ignition just long enough to fire, and I even wait a few seconds after turning the key to 'on' to let the fuel pump prime (if that's the right terminology). The sound only happens on the first stroke and then everything is fine. Usually only happens the first startup of the morning. Can cold weather be to blame? Sudden change of temperature? Condensation somewhere? Spark plugs? Thanks for all your insight.

Have you had a car alarm installed as of recently?

I had Best buy install one on my and everything was fine for about a month until I started getting the problem you're mentioning. Starting up the car was very scary.

They checked up on the lines and they said something was loose. They fixed it up and the problem has been gone since.

The bendix on your starter is sticking to the flywheel. Mine does it too.

Will this become a problem or is it not really something to worry about?

I do not have my s2k yet, but I'd like to know if mine does something of this sort......

Over time, it will just wear down the gear, eventually causing you to replace your starter. It's not to good for your flywheel either.

i do have a viper alarm with 2 way transponder, so it's always communicating back and forth. But this problem occurs at random times. I've parked the car for a week and it started just fine.

i also just had a new clutch/PP/flywheel installed. and the problem has become more frequent since then. assuming this is the problem, how soon will it be before I need a new starter and/or flywheel.

I believe I have the same problem. Been happening for a couple years now but it only seems to happen when it's cold out and the car has been sitting for a while (overnight or all day). It's sporadic and it's not a pleasant sound.

I have a crummy alarm that the previous owner put in but I didnt have this problem for the first few years. Even so, it's a rather metalic sound so I can't see how it's the alarm.

Starter sounds about right to me.

Not that it might not be starter-related as mentioned above... But I believe it is more likely the chain tensioner for the timing CHAIN as discussed on the linked thread...

I've had the same problem that the starter sound like metal grinding on metal. I've also had a problem where the car just won't start. The battery is fine the fuel pump primes, but when I hit the starter button, I hear the relay switch on, but the car doesn't turn over. I've had this happen 4 times now. three times, it finally started. The last time I had to get it towed, and the dealer never found anything. It seems like if the car is rolled forward, it finally starts after a while.
