Okay, i had a broken taillight due to a hit and run and i didnt want to pay full price for one from honda. I bought a set on ebay and it was too good to be true. Auction said for an 03 set and it wasnt. Not only was it not the chrome rings, it was extremly faded. Obvioulsy one of the recalled being resold.
So, since my taillgiht is perfect, except for a broken lens, is it possible to just take the lens off and put the lens from the faded one on to it? If i bake the tail light, what is going to happen?
Im in the middle of doing this and it seems to be going no where. There are tabs holding the lens to the plastic and then there is tons of glue. Any tips?
gotta use a flathead screwdriver and pull the tabs apart.. and then pull the glue apart.. make sure it was baked long enough to loosen up the glue but not melt the housing.. have fun!
Seriously...from the 1) cloved seal being visible RIGHT THERE for everyone to see (vs. our headlights seal being 1-3" behind the fender's metal skin and therefore unseen after conversion) to the 2) relatively satanic flat face of the clear cover that "flips/kicks" at its outer corner of the car making that flat area extremely vulnerable to cracking under pressure (vs. our headlights having a curve along its entire length offering extreme strength to accept the pressure of splitting the two halves) to the 3) damned seal again once attempting to reseat everything because the sealant is extremely visible so that if you goof and apply too much...its there for all to see .
I'll say it again, although its definitely "been done" splitting taillights is the work of the devil
I painted my taillights (only after having already successfully cleared my headlights), and used the same procedure. Obviously, the tailights are a helluvalot easier to remove than the headlights, but they were more difficult to seperate. It took several bakes and I still ended up cracking the rh lense. Re-sealing is a biatch too. Granted, my lense housing is silver now, so any silicon was very visible upon re-sealing the lense. The uncracked lense sealed fine and never leaked, but obviously, the cracked one fogged up within a day.
I toyed with the idea of having fog-white lenses made for the whole tail assy, but considering what a pain in the @ss it was, I think I'll leave well enough alone.
I do have to add, though, after re-sealing the lense, It helped make a differens visually to apply another bead of sealant around the ouside of the assembly, in the crevasse between the backing and the lense. If you force the sealant in, you'll get a good seal, and if you take your time and smooth it afterwards, it'll come out pretty nice. Just be prepared to learn a few new four letter words.
