Test Pipe in VA?
Hey all,
I'm new to Virginia and their inspection laws. I will be putting a test pipe on my car and would like to get information about inspections. Obviously it's not kosher but I'm sure many of you have found loophole (or a nice inspector). Any suggestions?
Thanks!
James

There's no loophole...the law is that a catalytic converter is to be on all road-bound vehicles.
Finding someone [publicly] offering you the name of a "nice inspector" won't last long...as that nice inspector will shortly receive a visit from a state trooper once his name / business is posted in a public forum as being willing to illegally pass emissions failures.
Those points made...if anyone does have advice for James, please consider PMing that info to Jim rather than posting it publicly.

It is really the only "bummer" on the State Inspection codes. Compared to many states VA is very lenient on inspections
I'm pretty sure that once a car has passed 20 years of age the cat isn't needed anymore and my soon-to-be-catless car will be 20 in 2006
There's no such thing as a nice inspector - they're all at least A.S.S. certified
Taking a test pipe off once a year is not hard ......and by the way, if you don't drive the car on a public road for 14 days after the inspection the inspector is not liable - my last inspection "required" the car sit at the shop for 14 days

you will fail.... just swap it out real quick when you have two.. every 2 years...
or find someone that'll pass you.. but you gotta take in another S to run on the rollers to pass the emissions....(highly illegal)

^ emissions is every two years... inspection is every year......
the inspections up here is probably the same as down there.. they check the basic stuff, lights, brakes, tires.. blah blah....
now emissions, they actually put your car on the rollers and they run your car for about 3-5 minutes in a given rpm range.. and they stick this tube/sensor thing in your exhuast pipe to read the emissions....the only way you can bypass this is by having another identical car run on the rollers..... and this is on top of the basic inspection...
and like you said certain cars that are a certain age don't have to go though it.....
i'm actually surprised we have it up here but you guys don't.... it's wack...
