Can't blame VDOT. The early rain washed away the pre-treatment. Then the worst snowfall came at rush hour. Life sucks sometimes.

I was stuck yesterday. I left work at 3:10 and got home at 8:10. 5 hour commute for a typical 45-50 minute commute.

I got stuck at the multiple car accident on 7w leaving Leesburg. I was there for ~2-3 hours. Biggest problem with Rt. 7 was that accident blocked traffic when the snow was starting. Then once it was finally cleared enough to start letting cars go through the snow had piled up and all the rwd cars were getting stuck. I saw at least 40-50 cars on Rt. 7 abandoned on the median, in a lane, against the gaurd rail because they were stuck.

My beater corolla handled it like a champ. Fwd, decent tires, and some experience is what was necessary.

FYI, NoVA drivers. The proper way to get unstuck is not stand on the gas with tires spinning at 50mph. I watched a BMW do that for minutes straight. Had my cell phone ready waiting for the next my BMW caught on fire news story.

Neighbor I commute into work with (his week to drive) buried the passenger's side of his truck into a tree yesterday afternoon as we headed home. Not 3 miles from our neighborhood . we're okay, but I feel for him... He & his wife learned just before the holidays that they'll be expecting their first child. This coming weekend they had things all lined up to trade the truck in for a family car. Poking along at ~ 20mph, no unnecessary inputs...truck just started sliding on ice & nothing he could do but wait for a tree on the other side of the 2-lane to stop us...

Was any one on the outer loop around 8PM last night around Andrews AFB? I was on the inner loop and a tour bus and a 18-wheeler were in an accident that blocked all lanes. Nothing was moving for hours with tons of little fender benders behind it. Not sure how emergency crews made it... People had the shoulders pretty tied up. Just wondering how long people had to wait.

Had so much fun offroading last night in the Ridgeline in the middle of it @ 8 o'clock. The streets were completely abandoned with tons of snow and people walking to the supermarkets in it. Unreal that a foot of snow ground us to a hault like it did but I guess since we got it all in such a short time It was more than they could deal with.

Just an idea.

I live right near 795 which they covered in the little video. I drove by this-morning on the way to work and there were still about 2 dozen cars there.

I got out of traffic jam just in time, I think. It only took me 2 hours for a regularly 45 minutes HOV drive to get home but not with out drama. Left office 3:10 also trying to make it to HOV before 3:30 but at 3:25 I'm only at I395 S King St. exit so I decided to turn around and pick up a slug in Crystal City line. A brand new looking black MX5 was not far behind me when I exited King Street to merge I395 N on the way to Crystal City. I guessed he saw me drifting a little (ESP off) and tried to imulate me. Needless to say, he caused a traffic jam on 395 Noth bound.

Anyways, the snow gotten realy bad by the time we were at Springfield mixing bowl. The drive was slow but surely. When I dropped off my slugs at Horner road, the road condition has gotten worsed. The last 50 yards to my house and my driveway is uphill so that was a lot of challenge. Two kids pushed my car out of being stuck in my neighborhood and my daughter shovel the driveway and finaly made it to the garage but the clutch was burnt. It turns out my car's ESP does not turn completely off.

But back on topic, I don't completely blame VDOT for that miss because the snow storm came down so fast the roads got clogged quickly before they have a chance to clear them.

P.S. I was not driving my S.

It was a perfect storm.

Rain washed away pre-treatment. Then the Gov sends people home and super heavy sticky snow.

Ad the typical mix of DC drivers.

We have a home nurse aide, she left early at 5, took her 2 hours to get to the beltway and river road which is about 2 miles. Another 3 hours home to Silver Spring.

I lost power at 10:30, brr it's getting chilly in here. All my food is being stored outside now.
