Default When was the last time you checked your oil?

For the second time in recent memory, there is a thread in the main forums about somebody blowing up their engine because they didn't check their oil between oil changes.

This post is especially for all the new owners. You MUST check your oil at least every thousand miles. More like every tank of gas would be better (which is what Honda recommends in the owners manual), but if you can at least check every 1000, you'll dramatically decrease your risk of a ruined engine.

Oil consumption varies widely from car to car, but some otherwise healthy seeming AP1 engines can burn as much as 1qt/1k miles! Check your oil, and check it often!

There is a grammar error in the topic title, but good point none the less.

This past weekend as I did my oil change

Honestly, this really applies to AP1s more so than AP2s. I just did my oil change and I got almost every drop I put in. I have 129k miles and :knock on wood: doesn't burn a drop. AP1s have been known to burn oil and obviously enough to blow a motor, so good idea on the thread.

+1. My AP1 drinks about a quart every 1.5-2k. Conveniently, the first time I discovered this was around mile 2,500 of the trip home with 600 to go after taking delivery. ...and I broke the oil filler cap prying it off.

I had motul put in about a week ago... 300 miles later... i'm stil 200 miles to go on the clutch break in and i'll check my oil at that point (every 500 miles is when i normally check oil)

I also own a shaturn *no typo...* which i need to check almost every time i want to go anywhere... let alone every time i fill the gas tank haha.

So far :knock on wood: my ap1 doesn't do too badly

My beater corolla seems to do fine on 2 quarts of oil.

You definitely should check regularly but like Jeebs said the ap2 seems to be a lot less troublesome. When I owned mine my regular oil change interval was about 7,000 miles and at the end of that the oil still looked pretty good and I had burned very little. I usually added 1/2 a quart around 5,000 miles.
