21 and feel as if I'm in a mid-life crisis.

This is false. (Except maybe before 2008).

If you're doing it without your parents, you have to be over 23 to qualify for federal grants as independent. He already said his dad makes too much money for him to get any federal fin aid.

And to qualify for private loans, you generally need stellar credit, and a consigner. If his dad isn't willing to help him pay for school, I doubt he'd help him by consigning a loan. And finding family members to do something like that for you in these times is a lot harder than you think.

Student loan, not federal grants. I got private loans just fine, with just average credit (just a few credit cards).

Also there are multiple good state/city schools that are very cheap to attend. My school was only $5,000/year in tuition.
