Default spinoff question

So WMB split into two branches and is now WMB and WPX. The WMB stock gapped down to reflect the assets not under the WMB arm of the company. Being an owner of WMB, is it commonplace to issue like shares of WPX to its shareholders?

Never been a shareholder of a split/branch like this, so I'm curious.
Thanks for any input.
