Default Good driving spots

Please post up any good areas for driving.I've been in the Vegas area for about 3 years now and haven't been driving around much... so I have no idea where to go if I feel the need for a drive. Please indicate how many hours/minutes the drive is...sometimes looking for a short drive sometimes long.

Peace

I'd recommend Red Rock Canyon, some of the roads there are a challenge and the scenery is great.

Blue Diamond Rd. has a quick spot where there are some very high speed turns. In the 100mph range. I had a blast there.

Also, Red Rock is awesome.

And if you want a long drive, go up to Mt. Charleston. But, be careful of cops.

I did the "Valley of Fire" drive about a month ago, and am taking the girlfriend there this saturday. If you like Red Rock, this is at least 10 times better. It is about 50 miles North of town up the I-15. I think I had 160 miles on the trip meter by the time I got back home, so a "longer" drive for sure.

I still need to explore the road that leads due West out of Jean/Nevada Landing. I saw it from the airplane window the last time I flew back into town. Looks like a nice winding road and noone out there (read no cops ) so it may be a good spot to scout out and open 'er up. I'll let you know.

i like the roads leading out to hoover dam..but only in the middle of the night...also cops... but nice for scenic during the day...if you can deal with traffic. just go explore the desert..hop on the 15 and get out there, find some random service roads and explore your desert!

I finally made my way out to check out that road West of Jean. Ended up in Sandy Valley and saw some really odd stuff out there.

1. I house was being moved, axle broke on the trailer and they just left it there blocking half of a 2-lane road!

2. One house had a hangman in the front yard....complete with a mannequin strung up!!

3. Saw a place called 2 Hawks Ranch with .........no hawks

4. A guy sitting in a wheelchair in his front yard, giving my car the open-jawed stare as I drove by!!!

5. Another local yocal chilling on his dirt bike with a similar look on his face.

6. A teeny tiny airport out there where they just taxi the planes into the front yard of the homes and park it like a car!

All that and I couldn't connect the roads from Jean thru Sandy Valley and to Pahrump Rd (178) and eventually the 160. My regional map from AAA didn't show any local roads, but google says it is possible.

I had a couple more roads to check out when the low fuel light came on, so I had to bail. Gonna go back there and see if I can find my way thru. I'm stubborn like that. Must be a German thing.

The road itself outta Jean is well paved and straight with some nice high spped dips in the road. This eventually turns into some foothills with GREAT twisty turns as you drop down into Sandy Valley. My one complaint is the lowposted speed limit (35-45 mph depending). I was easily doubling that on the way back, but am suspicious of speed traps with those low numbers so they can generate some revenue. I'd presume many of the "police" out there are in unmarked (read local) vehicles. Was about to open it up the last mile or two heading back to Jean, but decided to keep my cool. Someone was looking out for me as an SUV Expedition Popo popped up coming the other way.

This is a great area for a radar detector (which I don't own)!!

More later,
David
