paivag:
Just get yourself a wireless card and a pringles can hit the net and you can probably hop on somebodys network right from YOUR HOUSE!!!

Well as for a speed I get now. I went to http://speedcheck2.optonline.net/speedchec...speedcheck.html I got 1130 right now. Its not to shabby.

My buddy at his house on Opt. online as well NO LIE gets over ~5,000!!!! He has an insane connection somehow. It is very very strange to see such a connection but I have seen it in action. Its a normal cable connection nothing special.

Any thoughts on how to get the connection FASTER? Any special things to optimize the connection for cable.

Cool link, Jim...I'll have to file that one away for future use. I'm currently around 2000+, but I'll check back from time to time to see how it changes throughout the day...

As far as optimization goes, there's not a whole hell of a lot you can do. There are a few external factors limiting your speed, with the main ones being any limits your ISP impose and the number of other users on your current traffic block. Your friend may be getting 5000 at one point in the middle of the day, and then have it drop to below 1000 as people start coming home and surfing the net...or he may be lucky and have very FEW neighbors on his traffic block, in which case his rate will rarely dip. If the local router is having a bad day, you'll also see things drop significantly.

I have an extra router I can sell you for $25. It's a 4 port DLink one that bought and never used.

I have a hub that I bought a long time ago to link my 2 computers together. Though I assume that it will not work because I need a "gateway" router.

Pardon my ignorance to this subject. I will find out what thing I have its at a friends house right now.

I was under the impression that just any old router will not work because it would open my computer up to ANYBODY and that I needed a gateway router that is specific for the internet.

I am having a very bad experience with D-Link 520 wireless desktop wireless network card, it took me almost 8 hours to find the way to solve the problem so, I don't recommend D-Link's stuff unless you are just buying the router or wirelss router..

Francis sells netgear wireless router and network cards (2) for somewhere around $100 a while ago, I should have bought it.. not sure if he still has it, if he still has it, buy it from him, that is a good price..

I'll say this again make sure you download the latest drivers/firmware for everything. I have found time and time again that solves any problems I encounter immediately.

Ran through the registry to "optimize" the connection. I was some what skeptical. Well in the link above I turned the connection speed from the maybe 1100 more like 1030 most of the time to a whopping 5500!!!!

NO LIE!!!! I couldn't believe it myself. I just did a down load of like 7 megs went like wild fire. It was about 4x as fast as my previous tested down load. Web pages load in the same amount of time. Though I feel better now knowing I got this going super fast!
