Default Cape Cod vacation question

Hey there...been a while since I've chimed in here since moving to Pittsburgh...

I am beginning to plan a Cape Cod vacation for my wife and I and six others for next June. Three of the couples share the same week anniversary.

We're all under 40 but pretty laid back and not looking to party necessarily.

Put it this way, my ideal week would be a little bicycling and a lot of eating, beach and a couple cigars.

Where should we go on the Cape?

*Reemphasizing....most interested in good seafood and nice sandy beaches!

Thanks!
Ryan

Go north about 200 miles and hit Bar Harbor Me, 53 miles of carriage roads and no cars allowed. best biking you will ever do ever. # of beaches in the area and the restaurants and seafood in Bar harbor are some of the best in the world. Oh one more thing there is this little park called Acadia!

Been there done that...spent a lot of time in Camden and a few other towns....been all over the Maine coast, but not the Cape.

Might be right again down the road but for now strictly looking to hit a Cape Cod beach.

You need to decide if you want to go to lower Cape (Chatham to P-Town), mid cape (Barnstable, whichincludes Hyannis and the Dennises)or upper cape (Bourne to Osterville). You can visit all of these areas while you are on vacation, but you need to pick one to find your hotel or cottages. Then you need to decide if you want to be on the bay side or the ocean side. The Ocean side has warmer water and easy access to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Upper cape is well developed with plenty of commercial development. You can always find what you need, but it can get very congested. Mid cape is also well developed and is usually more expensive. Lower cape is less developed and the most expensive. Let me know how cost concious you are, and I'll recommend some towns.

Then you need to set your budget. With eight people you could rent a four bedroom house for the week, but they can be hard to find. Four seperate hotel rooms will probably cost a lot more, so it is worth trying to find a house to rent NOW.

Hey there Twiztid!

Legal Bill, been to MV and Nantucket (sailed from Montauk with my Dad) a while back and don't especially care to go again on this particular trip, so access to those ports means nothing to us.

$ wise, I'm pretty used to paying resort/tourist inflated prices for trips like these so, although I don't want to say price isn't a factor, I plan to spend some money on lodging and the quintessential $10 hotdog.

Our main goal is to find a house/villa/condo/hotel very near or on the ocean that we can stumble onto a nice warm beach and be lazy. An added bonus would be if we could at the of that day on the beach stumble the opposite direction for some good eats.

***On a side note, I looked at your avatar and want to congratulate you on your 8th year anniversary on being on this site! Pretty cool

Thanks. I see that just happened today.

I am not very familiar with the bay side of the Cape, so if that is where you want to go, I'm not going to be much help. On the south side of the cape, I'd look at the Maravista section of Falmouth for houses that can accomodate the whole group. You can then walk to Bristol Beach, Falmouth Heights Beach and a couple of places for dinner. For VERY warm water and higher rental rates, check out Old Silver Beach which is on Buzzards Bay. The Sea Crest Hotel is right on the beach. Just roll out the back door and you are on the beach.

Look at New Seabury in Mashpee if you want to stay in a resort style condo or house with golfing and access to South Cape Beach.

Osterville is a really nice, quaint cape cod village. It will cost big bucks torent a house there. You want to find something near Craigville Beach.

Dennis is loaded with little rental cottages and beaches, but it does get crowded and noisy. It is a big area for the college aged kids. I don't go there and so the best I can do is give you this link to a site that lists all the beaches:
http://www.dennischamber.com/modules.php?o...&artid=7&page=1

Hyannis is more of a port village than a beach village, but there are some beaches. the thing is, some are resident beaches and I don't know how that works for renters. I assume you get to use the resident beach. Tons to do in Hyannis and that includes things like the Cape Cod Melody Tent that has well known live acts all summer.

Eastham has Coast Gaurd Beach and that is probably the most beautiful beach in Massachusetts. Try to find a cottage within walking distance of CCB. You won't be disapointed.

For the higher end prices, and more artsy area, try Harwich and Chatham. The Chatham Bars Inn is very nice and very expensive. But is the best place down the cape.

Wellfleet and Truro have the Cape Cod National Beach. things are pretty quiet out there compared to other parts of the cape. Again, look for cottages that you can rent. they are often found in clusters and you may be able to get two of them close together.

Province Town is up at the tip of the Cape and that is a whole different scene. Huge gay community and lots of art and night life. there are also amazing dunes and beaches at Race Point.

Oh, and if you are into biking, find something near the Cape Cod Rail Trail. It runs from mid to lower cape. It used to be a rail road track bed which was abandoned. The land was converted to a 22 mile long bike path.
