My first car was an AMC Concord. First and last "American" car I've owned.
I did learn alot about cars that way though because nearly every component had to be repaired or replaced over the year + I drove it.
My first lesson in auto repair about 2 weeks after I bought it: exhausts are VERY HOT and you should not try to repair them yourself

My dad for years had a rambler like the one pictured above sitting in the back of the driveway all thru the 70's and early 80's.
There was not a week when someone did'nt stop and ask if it was for sale. So what does he do he sells the house and calls the junk yard to come haul the rambler away. I was so pissed and never forgave him for that.
I think he got $100 for it. It ran fine and still looked good.
