it depends on whether the individual offering the criticism is actually qualified to be constructive.

and if they are really really qualified, I pay for that.

i.e. ski instructor, golf instructor, etc

even if it is some idiot trying to act like a know it all, I still take it pretty good, but i just laugh to myself about what an idiot this guy is in my head.

I have learned alot of patients dealing with idiots and know it alls in my line of work.

Over the years, I have forced myself to take constructive critcism. It is best if I am prepared for it, rather than having it come out of left field at me.

I guess I don't see signing up for lessons as a good example of taking constructive criticism. With lessons and other voluntary education, you have acknowleged the fact that you do not know something and want to learn about it. I think that is different from someone like a friend or co-worker who gives you advice about what you are doing wrong and how to improve.

I think the boss, a parent or other superior is in a unique postion. Like the educator, they are supposed to possess superior skill and experience. But often it is hard to take their advice because they are detached from the people on the front line who are living with the issues every day. This was the area where I really had to learn to take the criticism.

I think it tougher to take "constructive criticism" when the boss or supervisor just wants it done his way becuase he's too stupid to understand any other.

In tech this happens frequently when the boss can't comprehend the emerging technology.
basically they are just plain wrong but don't want to or can't change from their comfort zone.
