I heard this through the grape vine, and it will probably work in this instance too.

I believe coinstar doesn't take a percentage if you select a gift card. Coinstar machines are all hooked to the internetz to verify transactions and issue gift cards. Before putting your money in, reach around the back of the machine and unplug the internetz cord, then proceed with the transaction, and select a gift card. Since the machine can't call out, it will not be able to issue you a gift card. Since you selected a gift card, you do not want the machine to eat a percentage of your deposit. The only recourse for the machine is to give you full reimbursement in cash.

So, doing this you can probably get a free $10 in cash instead of on a gift card. I guess that would be considered stealing though

Correct me if I am wrong but a giftcard that has to be spent at a certain place isnt really $10 is it? Being the stingy shopper i am I prob would not find a bargain good enough to spend it on.

Now if they gave you $50 for $40 I might go out of my way to find one of the machines

I like vtec's solution

My bank has a coin counting machine and if you have an account there,
you can bring your change there and they will count it and cash you out
for free. I would imagine my bank isn't the only one that does this.
