Got snow?
Even though I have snows and AWD, I fully intend to work from home.
It's the cretins with 1/64 inch tread depth baldarinis and no clue what to do in the white stuff that annoy me.
just one of those can make my 1/2 hour commute turn into 2-3 hours in a heartbeat.
and I don't have to be at work to do my job. heck with VOIP phone I don't even have to be at my desk to answer it.
mind you if the power goes out..... I'm screwed.

I just find it incredibly frustrating the older I get. It seems that like anything else "safety" becomes the easy fallback excuse to not go to work, to close schools and day cares, and for governors to shut down the highways. If people don't want to go to work, fine... take a day off and stay home if you feel more comfortable. But more and more, people seem to think that some bad weather means normal routines and responsibilities no longer apply.
"Safety's sake" can be used to justify almost anything remotely dangerous, and everything in life is full of risk. Driving to work when a 75° and sunny is a risk, but add some snow and it crosses the danger threshold for enough people to deem it as unacceptable.
To be clear, I'm just saying there's a distinction between making a choice to be cautious vs. claiming that something is inherently too risky and that you shouldn't have to be responsible for that choice. Just because the weather is beyond your control does not mean anyone is absolved of their responsibilities.
And while it hasn't happened yet, I know we're going to get a call from Day Care saying that they're going to close early, even though the kids are perfectly fine in the building. It's because the employees don't want to stay at work any later.
Quite frankly, if someone is physically capable of shoveling/snowblowing their driveway, or willing to go the store or the mall or the movies this Saturday evening, their idea of "acceptable risk" needs re-evaluation and their priorities questioned.

You will get a call from day care. I got that call during the blizzard of 78, to be honest they should have called sooner. While the kids are fine in the building, the caregivers want to get to the safety of their own homes. I understand this and I also understand it is a PIA for parents who may not have the flexibility to make their hours depending on weather. I drive the Jeep and don't fear getting stuck, but once the roads ice over and get slippery, I'm fine with going home. No one but me will pay my $1000.00 deductible if I crack up the car.
In the blizzard of 78 no one knew what was coming and people ended up stranded on the highway. It took Rick and me 2+ hours to make a ride that should have taken 20 minutes. My sister was stranded in RI for a week and she was only 35 miles from home.
Since that time, the pendulum has swung the other way, a bit too far. Panic ensues with the threat of 3" of snow. It is a bit much, but hey, just enjoy the time with Julia when daycare closes.
Well, thanks to the wonders of Facebook, I get updates from the day care (it's a 3-branch local family run company). Over the course of the evening, I watched it go from "we are closing at 3PM tomorrow" to "we are closing at noon" to "We are closed tomorrow."
Now if only they'd refund the $40/day it costs for us full timers...
So you called it. The wife's office decided to close, too, so she'll be home with Julia. I'll be taking the Blizzak'd Outback to work. I put some extra time in earlier this week, so I'll have a ~5 hr day max, regardless of the weather.

We have an awesome daycare. The school district has closed over 4 days so far this year, daycare not once. When the schools are closed, the older one just joins her little brother at daycare.
They will both be there today while I get some work done.

Take pics of Julia and the snowman you will build for her. Enjoy your weekend.
Now our wonderfully educated governor issues a statewide transportation ban requiring non-critical vehicles off the road by 4PM or face $500 fine and/or a year in prison.
It's not even snowing here, yet you're asking us to leave work and go home? Yea, no thanks. Way to blindly issue a statewide ban that doesn't apply to tens of thousands.
Yes I'm well aware that our local PD might not enforce it, that shouldn't be there decision. In fact we have enough power hungry local cops who would take joy handing out tickets at 4:01 as our parking lot empties out.
