Default Having to make a sad decision...

well the time has come where i have to make a very sad decision. i'm having him put to sleep. my dog is a 14 year old toy poodle that is blind and deaf. he also goes to the bathroom all over the house and it has gotten worse the last few days. they say that dogs don't go where they sleep but he wets in his crate. i have to have him sleep in his crate at night so he's not roaming around the house.
I got Jean Luc for my 16th birthday. he was a great loving dog. but his "quality of life" is just not there anymore. this is very hard for me to do. i was prayin that he would "fall asleep" at home. i guess he is still very strong at life. all he did last night was cry. so at 240 today i'll be at the vets. my grandmother and I are going to take him and I'm going to have her bring him in and leave him there. i'll be in the car balling my eyes out. I was originally going to have him put to sleep and then bring him home and bury him but i don't want the last image of him "sleeping" in my head. so the vet said that they'll cremate him and then spread his ashes. then got to come home and clean up and throw much of his stuff out. some i'll keep like his bed and blanket and toys so when i get another pup i won't have to buy anything. so i'm going to go give him his last bath. he'll at least smell good.

Sorry Fitzy. It's always a hard choice, but you are doing the right thing.

If it makes you feel better, ask the vet for a private cremation and bury or scatter his remains yourself.

We have one kitty buried in our yard, and she even has a little grave stone. It may not make sense to some, but it made me feel better to have it.

Do whatever makes you feel better to handle this sad day.

omg Fitzy I have never been the type to have a pet for several reasons
(the biggest one being allergies) but after reading your post I can honestly
feel how you must be feeling and how hard it must be to have to make
that difficult decision on a pet you have had for so long!

You actually brought a tear to my eye.

As Lainey said, I too believe you are doing the right thing if his quality
of life has deteriorated to such a point that it's not good for him or you.

My heart goes out to you and you'll be in my thoughts today.

Fitzy, Sorry to hear this. I can speak about it a little though having to put down 4 precious pets in the last 7 years has given me some experience with it.

My first thing to say is I was exactly like you, when it came time for the actual visit to the vet. I didnt want to stay. What happened was our cat bobo got really sick on a sunday night and we had to call our vet after hours. Long story short it was her time to go. We were going to leave her there and let the vet put her to sleep. But somehow I couldnt just leave her there alone. I stayed along with rose. I looking at it afterwards feel better for doing so as the actual procedure was very very short less than a minute and we were able to speak softly to her as it happened which i feel was good for the emotion of bobo. Animals have a keen sense of emotion and being there somehow i know calmed her she passed very peacefully.

Since than we have had to do it 3 more times. It is NEVER easy but i think its the best for us and our beloved pets to be together. The actual procedure if you have never seen it is a simple shot to a foreleg. Very quick very painless for the animal.

Just wanted to share my experience, I personally always have the vet clip a piece of hair for me and I take it home. Its something i do that makes me feel better.

Just like lainey said you can request the ashes and scatter or keep them if you wish.

I wish you strength today with however you decide.

Its never easy saying good bye to a beloved pet but from reading your story you are doing the correct thing for yours. The quality of life has gone and from the crying Jean Luc is suffering.

Good luck today.

Dave

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

If it's not too late, please go in with your friend. It's hard, but he'll know you're there with him and I believe it will be a comfort to him. You can also have his ashes put in a container to remember him by.

Sorry to heard this Fitzy, it's hard to let him go. We put a HotDoggy to sleep two years ago and still I see him in my dream running around time to time .
