Default Heat Issues w/ 91 Camry

So I have a 91 Camry as a beater and the heat does not blow hot, more like warm/cold.
The dash needle always shows cold and doesn't move at all when warmed up, is there a sensor or something that is not reading that gauge needle which causes the air not to be hot? Also my mom's friend just said that the fan is on right when you start the car even when the car is cold and the reason for that is because the gauge thing is broken.

Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Thanks

thermostat would be my first guess

could be stuck open and not letting the car's antifreeze warm up before sending it to the heater core

I would check to see if it has coolant first . then next would be the thermostat , then waterpump ..

My car has a small leak right now and I dont feel like fixing it till summer when I do some modding . But when I have no heat I know it needs coolant

I had an old Ranger that would periodically run low on coolant and would raise heck with the heater.

with a head gasket you would see a LOT of white smoke coming from te tail pipe as it tries to burn the antifreeze and i would venture to say the car would overheat

not necessarily especially if it just starting to go, i had a friend that had a car with the same symptoms went on for months changed the hoses, heater core, thermostat car never burned white smoe but always loss coolant eventually that gasket really blew and thats how the mystery was solved anyhow like i said you might laugh but.......
