Help with a hummmmmm
OK, perhaps a stupid question but -
I installed a new Maven countersunk SS shift knob. I love the short throw and the look, but I kept hearing a new hum/vibration when driving. Once in gear, as you let off the gas, there is a distinct and loud hum from the transimission. The only thing different was the shift knob, so I tried the old OE knob again (it is a new car for me, so I thought I could have been imagining it) and the sound was not there with the original knob.
So, I assume - the new Maven knob is just a solid piece of SS threaded onto the shaft, and consequently sends out the sound of the transimission louder than the OE knob which has some leather, plastic, etc in it as a buffer. The question is - how can I damper this noise? I was thinking of some silicon caulk on the Maven knob when I install?
Anyone heard of this problem when putting on a solid steel knob over the OE knob? The whine is pretty pronounced.
Thanks for your opinion!

never had that problem with any counter sunk knobs i had on the S
does it go away if you switch back to the oem knob?
i guess you could put some type of foam in the boot to dampen the noise

Rubber ring at base of it much like on a garden hose. I am not sure at all if this would help but never know can't hurt. If its counter sunk so much it might be acting much like a BELL making noise from the vibrations.
Other idea might be to get some sound deadening material and put it on the inside of the count sunk part of the knob.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I agree with Pinky's bell comparison and will try some of these suggestions. Yes, the noise goes away when I replace the OEM knob. I have also sent a message to Heeltoe automotive where I purchased the knob to see if they have had this issue.
I appreciate the input!

The noise comes when you let up on the gas while IN gear - just a loud whine from the transmission. I do not think there is anything wrong with the transimission or clutch, it is just a natural sound the tranny makes when you hit 8k in 3rd, then let up when the stoplight approaches and before you downshift. A natural sound, but very magnified with this particular knob. As soon as I reinstalled the OEM knob you could hear this normal tranny sound, but it sounded muted/normal - the exhaust note is predominant, not the transmission whine. So, I am pretty convinced it is the knob. Many knobs have plastic sleeves, etc. This one is solid SS with nothing else involved to damper the tranny sound.
i will be trying some pipe tape and maybe some silicone caulk in the space that is created by the countersunk hole. (if I can fit some)
