Default Hey Dave

Our Cannon A-70 bit the dust... I think. Anyway, since it cost less to buy everything new rather than fix the old, what is your recommendation for a good point and shoot digital camera with telephoto lens? We want a big view screen, lightweight body and as few buttons, controls and settings as possible. Is there any recent technology that you consider a "must have" for ease of use and quality of picture?

I think point and shoot cameras make zippy/Dave

I think there are some nice ones out there right now. Do you need to be able to put the camera in your pocket, or can the camera be heavier/bigger than that?

Big and heavy = bad. Who wants to carry a big heavy camera around? I'm never going to bother to learn how to use all the functions. The Cannon A70 had about a million functions and we never used any but the telephoto lens. I'm not trying to make some sort of statement to the world with my camera. I just want to be able to take some decent pictures.

That's what I had that just broke. And we didn't use it too often either. There must be something that will last...

I've been pretty happy with my Fujifilm Finepix S700. Very lightweuight, screen and regular viewfinder, easy basic controls, 7.1 megapixels, 10 optical zoom, and uses up to a 2gb memory card. Powered by 4 AA bateries. Small enough to fit in a large jacket or vest pocket.

Note: on a 17 inch screen the first picture is just about life size.

Auto setting is my friend, BUT I would like to learn more. My Olympus is about five years old and bulky compared to some of the newer point and shoot cameras out there, however it has served me well.

I like the fact that my point and shoot fits in my purse. If it were to break, I'd buy another, though, in addition, I would not mind something bigger and better for the days we just ride in the S and I try to take slightly better than decent pics of things that interest me. I can't travel with a big bulky camera and lenses and the like, I'd have no room for shoes.

That looks interesting, but it seems to be about twice as big as our current camera, which we already think is too big and do not carry in our pockets. It is hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like there are all sorts of funtions and we really don't need a camera that does a bunch of stuff. We never use those functions. Thanks though.

When we first got our current camera, we went throough the manual and tired to understnad some of the functions. Then we put the camera away and the enext time we used it we could not remember what any of the functions were. The little ideograms on the camera body and view finder are meaningless to me. We just used auto focus and auto flash and the zoom lens and all was well.

I'm with you Bill, I want a small camera that takes decent quality pictures
and I don't need a ton of bells and whistles.
