I just checked heating oil futures for next winter.
december, january, and february are all over $4.00 at wholesale.
that's probably 4.50 delivered.
at this rate we could see $5.00 a gallon next winter.
this is nuts.

Which is one big reason it looks like we decided to hold off buying a house 'til next year. For now, we stay in the townhouse and save money, partially because it's cheap to live here, and partially because I'll save thousands of $$ not having to heat a house.
Natural Gas is up too, but not as bad as home heating oil.....you guys are gonna get nailed.
A side note, I'm starting to read that some analysist are suggesting a bit of a bubble on oil prices....it would be nice if it popped.

the poor people and the people living on the edge will get hurt the most
the big two concerns on the wood stove forums are there will be many folks buring wood in unsafe conditions this year ie un-permitted installs and having the stove too close to combustibles which can lead to death and the fact that the prices of firewood will increase because of the demand, less new housing (means less trees being cut down) and fuel costs to get the wood to the buyer

It's gonna get ugly as people have to shift their priorities in order to pay just to heat their homes (and many who can't afford it period)...
It'll be interesting to watch the oil barons play their game to continue to keep us addicted to the slick stuff.
Starting to make geothermal (or even electric heat) look good.
