What's the life of a sump pump anyway?
Levi
That's one hell of a pump, Levi. I have not been so lucky. Maybe runnign constantly was somehow good for the pump???
I find that the quality of the pump makes a difference, but in no event did I ever get even 10 years out of a pump that was called on to run maybe one or two weeks out of the year. I have had a couple of pumps fail on me while in action and require replacement while I was up to my ankles in water.
Lainey, I get nervous when they are about five years old. I test run them every so often by adding water into the sump. Also, the content of your soil makes a big difference. Soil with concentrations of iron seem to be very hard on pumps. When I test run them I listen to them carefully and try to remeber the sound they make. If they start to get loud or vibrate, I take them out and see if there is something in the impeller causing the noise. If the impeller is clear and the pump is sitting flat but still making excessive noise it is time to switch it out.

Thanks, Bill.
We had ours installed about eight years ago. It doesn't go on that often. Maybe one or two storms per year, but we have the dehumidifier draining into the sump pump area, so it gives it a test run from time to time.
The past couple of weeks, it is getting one heck of a workout.
A spare is not sounding like a bad idea.

Some towns in our area. We're not listed, but we got over 5 1/2" of rain by 1:00 PM yesterday.

That's a lot of rain!I talked to my brother in law today (he lives in FL). His step daughter lived in an apartment a couple towns over. Sewage pipe broke, and everything she owned is ruined.
She has major health issues and some pretty bad luck. Now this.

So that answers that. She is staying with a friend and my brother in law say they are talking about moving her to FL.
