in this case they were just crawling on him and had not attached.
so it was just grabbing them.
basically ryan has it right, just pinch em off at the head next to the skin when they are attached. having fingernails helps.

females attach and spend the rest of their life.
and ryan we have lots of deer around here. so lots of lyme disease.
most of the dogs in the area have lyme, including ours.
