For a while now I was checking out the nav systems for the S. I was looking originally at like the Garmin systems etc. but then I visited the Electronics forum and saw couple of nice units that Steve and George have. I checked them out online and it gets kinda confusing....going with the ipod and getting the nav system that way...or staying with system like Garmin. I don't like the way Garmin looks in the car, I preffer the one like you guys have, what are your opinions, the cost, setup, special mods etc.
As you know by now I don't know s**** about electronics.

Can you pick a nice system for about $500?

$500? Yes, get a Tomtom Go. They are , imo, better than Garmin. It's touch screen. No wire unless you opt to plug it to cig lighter (it has internal battery that last about 5 hours). Their new version, 300 and another higher model (600?), is either just came out or coming out within a month. Entire US map preloaded to 1GB SD (included) on the 300, and enitre US + CA preloaded to 2.5GB HD on the higher model. It doesn't come more plug-&-play than this.

Oh yeah, don't go by the retail price. They can be had for hundreds lower if you do some searches.

Pocket PC was an excellent low cost alternative couple years back. Stand alone GPS has greatly improved and lowered in price since then. Cost between a decent plug&play GPS and pocket pc w/ nec. accesories (memory card, gps bundle, etc.) can't be more than a hundred now.

Benefits of stand alone GPS are many, including better readout, better mounting/wiring, and more integrated/trouble free. Who wants to fumble around w/ a stylus while driving? Pocket pc also has a nasty habit of wiping its stored memory clean when battery juice runs out.

Stand alone GPS is doing to pocket pc GPS what cell phone did to pager, imo.

I love my Alpine. But it costed me an arm and a leg. That's why you see me limping from time to time.
