Default The New England Community

Two weeks ago this community came together to raise money for the victims of a hurricane. Together we raised over $6,000. We all could have given to another effort, but we decided we would do it together. Why did we each decide to make our contribution as part of this group? People only do that when they feel they are part of a community that defines them in some way.

Just three nights ago I picked up my new car. Although I have known the folks on this board for only the last three years (at most) you were the first group of people I wanted to share the joy with. And even though the car had nothing to do with Honda or the S2000, and even though I only gave a couple of hours notice on a Monday afternoon, by 9:30PM we had a nice little 5 person meet going in the parking lot of Bickfords.

Ben was first to respond. He met me at the dealer and waited patiently while I took delivery. We went to my house and he took pics while I ate supper. On the board, Steve said he was busy, but Ben and I didn't care. We used the net to figure out where he lived and Ben left his car at my house so we could follow the directions to Steve's house. Then Glenn got involved when he learned we were looking for Steve. Although he was working late, he decided to come down and meet us too. Julius was at an evening class and he joined us too.

The five of us joked and checked out the car. I got the usual kidding about being old and Steve got the usual kidding about being big and Julius, Glenn and Ben got the usual kidding about being Asain. We almost got stopped by cops and we had a couple drinks at the pub and I went home with the great feeling of community that this site brings to all of us.

I couldn't do that with any other group of friends. This place is great. Folks from many different backgrounds, ages, professions and locations go out of their way to support eachother. I know that more of you would have come with just a little more notice too. The group is too important to loose it over a disagreement about an internet thread.

I encourage all who were involved in the dispute to think about the value of our friendship and weigh that against the hurt feelings or injured pride that each of you may have suffered in the past two days. I would ask each person to stop dwelling on the insults you might have suffered. Instead, ask youself what offenses you committed on others, and ask yourself how you would feel if you were in the other person's shoes. I would ask each of you to put the incident behind you and I would ask old friends to see that the value of their friendship is more important than this falling out.

Please post your good thoughts here.

Bill

Thanks for posting this Bill.

I thought about posting, but didn't know where/how to begin.

Just one day of these boards being so quiet is enough. I click on this board a few (OK a LOT) of times during the day. I'm already missing the laughs that I get when I'm here and also the bantering that goes on here.

I had a bad day at work yesterday and didn't get any laughs here. I almost had to take up drinking last night.

Rick and I have been amazed at how comfortable we feel with all of you people that we only met a year ago. Something just clicks when this group gets together.

By the way, we even felt comfortable with Max's friends with the RED hair, tattoos and body piercings. Except for the nightmares I had that night, but that's another thread.

i agree completely with Bill's sentiments.

my first meet was back in fall of '03 when Twiztid took us on a hell ride through the back roads of New Hampshire and actually had the pleasure of eating lunch with Bill and his wife.

although i only attended a few meets (tech day at DarkKnight's in '04 and Mohawk drive in early '04 with about 29 S2000's from new england and new york which featured Ben's adventure around the hairpin turn), everyone made the extra effort to be personable and friendly.

i've only conversed with Glen via email on a few design projects, but he typifies the NES2KO community in his attitude, friendliness and personality.

i enjoy being part of the community and enjoy keeping up with the going's on even though i recently sold off my s2000. one tiff does not change the community we have here.

Well put Bill. This group started off as a s2k car club but has grown into a community of friends. Some of us have moved on from the s2k for one reason or another and yet we all still get together for good times and laughs. Let's not forget that.

We are all passionate people here, and that's something to celebrate. There is no place in my life for people without energy and drive... I admire each and every one of you whom I've met here on the New England board and actually in person over the years.

That said, passion is dangerous. I'll pass along this little Vintage nugget because I think it works wonders. Imagine that the person you're talking to in a thread is actually sitting there with you in your living room. You'll laugh, you'll agree, you'll disagree, you'll debate... that's all goodness. Opinions can be shared and debated without name-calling. I know you guys know that -- so just shake it off and move forward.

For what it's worth, I've been thrilled to be a part of this community and to have this in common with you folks. I wish I had more time/freedom to actually see you folks in person more, but that's just my life.

Be well.
