the running of the torch is a public display to build support for the event.

if you have to have 60 riot troops with armed vehicle motorcades and 30 motorcycle cops to ensure it's security. has it lost it's value?
I mean it even now has a secret route so no one can protest the event.
if it's now secret, why bother?

and bushie comes out and says don't bother protesting becuase I'm going to the opening ceremonies.
maybe he needs to figure out it's not about him.

Let's face it: the Olympics gave up their reason for existence when they allowed professional athletes to compete. It's just another professional tennis tournament, ice skating competiton, etc. Let alone the fact that we will soon have to refer to chess players as "Olympic athletes."

This might be stupid question, but can some explain why people are protesting the Olympic Flame?

It is a sign of peace for god sake! Back in the day war's would stop and nations unite to participate in it.

I Don't understand what people protesting about, can some one explain?

ok so Tibet was once an independent nation.
peaceful monks and temples and all that.
china being the peace loving neighbor they are has put tibet under its 'protective custody'.
now some people question the humanitarian actions of china in Tibet and would like to see Tibet regain it freedom and independent status.

The olympic flame has become symbolic of china, since that is where the games are being held.

Stopping the flame is a symbolic gesture to bring to light the actions of china in Tibet.

It's easy to brush this off as nothing but the funny thing is, I suspect it is very effective in getting the message to China.
In the Chinese culture it is very important not to lose face.
So the dishonor of the torch and the protesting will certainly bother some people.

of course then again, it's a pretty safe bet its not on the evening news over there either.

I'm pretty sure it's Richard Gere's fault.
