Paging Dr. Scott Paging Dr. Scott
ok what's it going to take to get my system louder??
new amps?? more subwoofers?? new speakers?? a new car??
just thinking if it was 40% louder i'd be happy (for a few weeks anyway)

Here's the math
10 db gain is twice as loud
you have to double everything to gain 3db
ex .
1 sub = 90db
2 subs = 93 db ( +3db )
4 subs = 96 db ( +3db )
8 subs = 99 db ( +3db ) = twice as loud ... almost ,but at least the 40% you are looking for .
Steve give me some time , I told you that sub is just a temp fix

can we fit 8 subs in the car

Honestly though how about adding an 8 inch in the passenger's footwell
and i don't mean just the bass - doe the same math apply to the mids and tweeters

Sure does Steve. As Scott stated it takes a 10db change to double loudness. From a power perspective that equates to needing 10x as much wattage.
For example let's say that to produce 80db your amp is driving your speakers with 25 watts of power. To go to 90db, and effectively double your loudness, you would need 10x that amount of power or 250 watts.

So....you want the sound system that the group Disaster Area has......
Hotblack Desiato is the lead singer of the rock group Disaster Area, claimed to be the loudest band in the universe, and in fact the loudest sound of any kind, anywhere. So loud is this band that the audience usually listens from the safe distance of thirty-seven miles away in a well built bunker.
Thought I'd throw some Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy stuff since the movie is coming out.

Hitchhikers is awesome. So many good quotes from those books. I just started re-reading them again.
Pre-out voltage affects amplifier gain(s). Lower the pre-out voltage is the higher the gain at the amp needs to be to match volume levels. Higher gain, and therefore higher sensitivity, therefore means your noise floor changes.
But, for most good amps this isn't a large issue. The difference in quality between those two pre-out wise shouldn't be a real problem I don't think.
Scott, I was hoping to meet you at the Tech day but that didn't work out. I'm hoping I can come up and spend some time on Gille's dyno at some point and also check out vehinet. Seems like some interesting cars float through there. I hope you the best with Ballistic Motorsports. Starting a new business is some serious work!
