Default Paid Holidays

As far as I know, this is the first company I've worked for that requires I work the days before and after a Holiday to receive pay for that holiday.

Is this a common practice??

Very common, especially with unions.

Prevents the employee from making a long weekend even longer. Some do allow use of vacation time IF you have any available.

We don't get a lot of the minor holidays but we get from 12/24
through 1/4/09 off as the company "shuts down".

Not here either. We actually get floating holidays that we can use to bridge a long weekend w/o using our own vacation days. But in the end the same amount of work needs to be done.

My boss doesn't really care when I take days off. When you're a department of one person, there isn't going to be coverage for you any time. I think the manufacturing folks have limits on when they can take days off, but I don't think they have to work the day before and after a holiday.

A lot of large companies require you to work after the holiday if it is a scheduled day.
