Default People these days..

So I get a call from my mom this morning and she's crying. She was at the Vet ER where her dog (Mulligan) was diagnosed with internal bleeding and multiple failing organs. Turns out someone gave her a massive amount of rat poison. She's still alive in the ER now but the vet says she won't make it through the night.

My mother and step father do have house with an enormous back yard. Occasionally Mulligan would wander over to a neighbors yard and complaints would be made to keep her off the property. My mother thinks the neighbors have something to do with it but at this point it's impossible to make any accusations.

It's a lesson learned. Not everyone in this world is a nice and honest person. Not everyone will care about you or your pet, and in the end the pet is the owners responsibility. I told my mother and step father that this may have been prevented if they were more careful about where the dog gets into.

I have two dogs of my own. They don't wander around but they do bark from time to time. I'll pay more attention in case someone near by is having a very bad day.

Venting complete.

Sorry to hear about your parents dog. It's awful to lose your dog, but to lose one to poisoning, intentional or accidental, would just be heart-wrenching.

IF this was an intentional poisoning it's awful, but as you said there is no proof at this point. However, if the dog is a roamer it's possible he roamed into a garage, shed, or other area where either rat poison or other types of ingestible poison such as anti-freeze was readily available to him. Some dogs get into everything, and unfortunately many poisons are sweet to the taste or appealing to their palate making ingestion enticing. This sounds like it could be a totally innocent accident with no ill intentions meant on the part of any neighbor. I would think that neighbors who have typically taken the time to complain to your parents in the past, wouldn't move to the extreme of poisoning a dog knowing they would be the first ones that would appear guilty. Without concrete proof accusations are best left alone.

I'm glad to see you are approaching this with a level head. You are correct - as dog owners we are responsible for their whereabouts and actions at all times.

Thanks. That is very true that the dog could have gotten into this on it's own. I've read before that dogs love getting into things like anti freeze and what not. So yeah, I take back the "People these days" because we don't know if this was actually caused by a person.

Sorry to hear this. I agree it could be accidental. One of my sister's dogs got into one of their sheds once and nibbled at some poison. They caught it quickly and were able to get treatment. It was a huge ordeal.

Sorry for your Mom. Losing a pet is difficult.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom's dog.
<<<---- Obviously I love dogs as well.

To reinforce the dogs will get into anything side of things.
our Wiemaraner and Lab got into the tubes of caulking we had.
We didn't know which had eaten the most or really even how much.
for the most part it is just like an antacid but lots of it. too much could impact their bowels and create serious problems.
as a precaution I had two options.
1.) take the dogs to the vet and they could pump their stomachs, at something like a grand each....
or
2.) give them a purgative and let them clear their systems orally.
so basically I got to take the dogs out in the yard and give them each a half cup of hydrogen peroxide to "help things along"
for the record dogs aren't terribly fond of drinking peroxide.

needless to say they didn't get back in the house for a while.

damn that reallly sad and I'm sorry to hear that.

Dogs or pets for that matter are like family so it is very heart wrenching indeed.

Yea some toxic substances such as antifreeze is actually sweet tasting and so some states require that antifreeze have a bittering agent added to it to make it unpalatable.
