He lives on a back road in the middle of nowhere. So there's not a lot of criminal activity. Many of us leave various devices in our cars when parked in our yards - it's really not that uncommon because there really isn't much activity of this type to even think twice about.

I know people that leave their cars in their driveways, windows down, keys in the ignition and there's never been a problem.

 

Next town over, folks have been hit too. Gotta lock the cars take the stuff inside these days. Scum bags are everywhere.

Of course if they break your windows, when you're car is unlocked, that's just the "deluxe scumbag treatment."
