Or you could look at it this way - you will now have two cooling devices plugged in for food storage - your dorm size fridge, and a freezer. You are basically using twice the energy. If you had a normal fridge/freezer combo you are getting a double bang for your buck and only one item is plugged in.

I think the extreme heat in your house is dehydrating your brain!

True.... but a decent fridge costs close to a grand. A little 5 ft chest freezer would cost me less than $200 and accomplish the same thing.
