Default speakers

hey,
can anyone recommend places to replace the door speakers and possibly an amp? i went to rich's car audio in watertown today, and he wanted 1500 for door speakers and amp, 2000 for the same with subs under the seats. kinda expensive for me, what have people from this area spent on their systems? im planning on keeping the stock head unit for now. thx all.

I used Sound in Motion in Brighton.

The folks there are fun to work with, are extremely detail/quality oriented and price fairly. They tend to be busy so some scheduling may be required.

At this point I have only replaced the speakers (Focal 165k). I am waiting for some satellite radio head units to hit the market before making further changes.

Before I had mine done I spoke with Rich's. I believe them to be honest and do quality work but are a pricey shop.

What brings you to Boston (the school thing)?

im on leave right now so im home for the next week or so. i dont know much about car audio, so im looking for reco's on speakers and amp. rich was going to use a jl audio amp and mb quart loudspeakers i believe. clutch, how much did you spend on yours, if you dont mind. id like to keep it sub 1000 ideally. im not sure about a sub yet, id like to replace the doors and then decide if i want one. also, im working on programming a small minicomputer to be a linux based car mp3 player. i have a display unit and a keypad for it. once i get it finished (if ever.... work in progress) im going to need to run a cable to the head unit for input and figure out how to power it. but thats down the line, right now i just want to do speakers and an amp if i need it. thx for the help.

It went like this;

Focal 165k purchased from soundhabit.com $322 delivered.

Installation $165

Total $487

They sound clean.

An amp would be a big help but I will sort that out with the head unit later.

The MP3 project sounds great. I wonder though, if the Napster world fades, will MP3 continue to be a cool thing?

I think you don't need a AMP yet... since you are gonna keep the original head unit... well!! for the same head unit, any speaker in $100 range will be good enough... cuz the head unit won't have enough power to push the better speaker for better sound!! ( If I did not remember it wrong, this is what Pinky told me) so.. I believe a good speaker will be very good for you now...

Of course, I don't know how amp works without having a better head unit... but, I wouldn't do it if I am not gonna have a better head unit ..

Ouch! Rich's car audio is expensive! Are you having competition type quality system installed? Normal stereo upgrades shouldn't cost close to that type of money. Have you seen the OEM sub that'll be available in a few weeks that mounts to the existing spare tire location? It would be perfect to go along your stock head unit. I think H-A Accessories site has a picture: http://www.handa-accessories.com/s2000.html

Honestly, I think just a pair of better quality speakers are all you need. This is what I have on my car and it does make a huge difference. A pair of quality speakers will only run you $300-$500. Install is not too difficult to do it yourself either.

If you run $300~$500 good quality speaker without amp...
it will be kinda waste of money!! cuz Head unit doesn't have enough power to go that good!! Still, as what I believed.. a $100 range speaker will do good enough!! Aaron, maybe you wanna get an amp then!!

Actually I didn't buy the speakers in my S2000. I just looked at the receipt the previous owner paid when he bought it. I guess he got ripped off. But there is a big noticeable sound quality difference between stock though. It was easy for me to compare when I had both the yellow and white S2000s listening back to back tuned to the same music.

I had a set of inexpensive Alpine's installed at Rayco in Shrewsbury. I don't remember how much it cost, but I think the total was about $200-$250 including installation. I'm not an audiophile, but it makes a huge difference. I get really good sound with the stock stereo at max volume, which is loud enough for me (meaning loud enough to hear my music while driving on the highway with the top down).

I would recommend Rayco - they did an excellent job, and were really excited about getting to work on an S2k!
