The woodchucks had 1 of 2 choices in life, have their holes pluged and smoked to death, or, shot. As a farmer you cannot just leave these things unchecked to destroy your crops. In addition your equipment as well as you very costly pets, the horses. Yes, I grew up on a farm.
Hunting for deer is to me a total pleasure thing, not that I find it pleasurable, but it is a sport, it is not for protection of family and farm. I have never hunted deer, rabbit, turkey or anything like that. Just pests like woodchucks and starlings. Oh wait, I remember, I did try like hell to get the fox that took out 20 some laying hens...

but god forbid the farmer loses a few ears of corn

it's like me buidling a nice race track with no fences and then shooting a cap into doug's ass cause he came by to use the track
