Default Text to Speech on GPS

I continue to hold out on buying a GPS as I cant decide what I want.

I like the Garmin nuvi 260W with the wide screen and text to speech function. Just wondering from those with and without the option how much they like the function or wish they had it?

The Garmin nuvi 260W is about $250 The Garmin nuvi 200W is about $175...

Feedback? Any other features or models you suggest?

It often takes me awhile to pull the trigger on an electronics purchase with so many to choose from with so many option variables.

My GPS has text to speech, and I don't think it's a feature I'd want to go without. Maybe I'm just spoiled because my friends bought me GPS with the best features.

Honestly, I would guess it's a bit easier to keep your eyes on the road and look for the street sign, for your up coming turn, vs. having to glance at the GPS for the street name. BUT plenty of people don't have text to speech and are still quite happy with their GPS units.

Which model do you have Lainey?

I dont want to confuse Text to speech with voice guidance, which the 200w has.

SHUG, sounds like a matter of pure preference. If you can do without individual street names being pronouced and simply having the turns announced without the names is OK, you can do without it.

If you want to hear the name of the street pronounced, get the text 2 speech.

For $75 extra, I don;t think it's worth it.

The street names sounded like they would be a good thing to have when driving around Boston or Providence since streets are packed together so much.

I have a Garmin with Text to Speech. It's a street pilot model, but I can't remember the # offhand. It was a gift, so I didn't have to make that choice. I like having it, and it does a good job of saying the road names, but to be honest, I'm a visual person, so I glance at the screen most of the time.

On top of that, when I've put it in the S2000, I've found it hard to hear the voice clearly because the car's a little too noisy. (My car is stock, too!) But the engine/exhaust, and general lack of sound dampening make it tough to hear everything that's being said, even with the top up.

So half the time I don't quite hear what it said, so I look at the screen anyways.

So I think it works well, but if I had to pay for it, I'd probably not bother, especially if I used it in the S most of the time.

Then it may be worth the $75.

How many years do you think you will have it before you get a new one? I bet in a year or two, T2S will be almost standard.

If you have to retire it before then to get a newer version with updated maps, it may be better to just wait.

I know they all offer upgrades, but some companies charge almost as much for the new maps as it is for a new unit. That is no mistake I am sure.

Thanks for saving me from typing that, cause I was just about to.
