Ungrateful mole
One of the disadvantages of an inground pool is that small wild animals have a tendency to drown in your pool and end up in the skimmer. I have pulled out, mice, moles, rabbits, baby racoons, all drowned to death. Yuk!
Yesterday morning, Connie when out to add the weekly algecide treatment to the pool and checked the skimmer basket. In the basket was what appeared to be a drowned mole. So she reached in picked it up to throw it over the fence. Unfortunately the mole was not dead, instead of being grateful for saving its life, it bit her
. That was quite the surprise. So she called the emergency room and the nurse that answered the call informed her that she could have rabies!!!!!! And to get in ASAP. When she got there she was told that moles are safe they generally do not carry rabies, and ended up giving her a tetnus shot just in case.
Darn, that ungrateful mole. Now it lives, to probably end up in the pool again. There is not much you can do to keep them out, and there is no way they can get out once they get in.

don't complain about not getting the rabies shots.
from personal experience current treatment sequence is as follows.
day 0: rabies shot plus immuno-gamma-globulin shots @ 1 per 50 lbs body mass.
day 3: rabies shot
day 7: rabies shot
day 14: rabies shot
day 28: rabies shot.
your butt feels like a pincushion by the time they're done.

Yes, I am glad that it was not too bad. Just a cut on her hand and a tetnus shot.
I have heard about the rabies shot sequence and I at first thought that she would have to go through that.

Moles can be a pain in ars (or hand) for above ground pools too......my inlaws have been battling them the last 3 years. They seem to like digging under the pool, which results in the pressure of the water collapsing the tunnels. Leaving a 4 - 6 " deep grove at the bottom of the pool where the liner/water filled in.
