Ok... in my crusade to pinch pennies I've decided moving from a traditional phone line to voip might be a good idea. Like all of life's questions, this one probably should be answered by current and former S2000 owners. Does anyone have first hand experience with either Vonage or a similar system? How is the reliability/quality/value/hidden fees/etc? I just figured at least a few people must have some opinions on this which may prove helpful. Thanks.
My co-worker uses Vonage......has had it since August......still hasn't paid for it, because Vonage keeps rebating his service due to outages.
He experienced dropped calls and while making or using the phone would have his internet connection drop out on him.....
Not too sure if this is typical, but based on his expereince he would not recommend it.

Erick,
How much will it actually save you vs your current telephone bill? If, as Steve mentioned the cost pushes $25.00, a "regular" phone line with a few of the extras, call wating, etc. is right in that ball park. Could you make do with a "limited call" line, or something like that?
Do you have "features" on your phone line you can do without? I know that Verizon likes to sell the features such as Call Waiting, Caller ID as a package, which of course adds on to the cost of the bill.

Currently, I have a bare-bones Comcast phone package. I believe the bill comes to somewhere around $33 a month without niceties such as long distance calling or call waiting. Right now, the cell phone is used for all my long distance calls. The motivation for looking into VOIP was both for cost savings and to be able to make long distance calls without resorting to the cell.

I just signed up with Charter to include my phone with my internet and cable package. Regular price of 39.99 will be 29.99 for the year. It includes all local and long distance calls within the US. Includes voicemail, call waiting, caller ID, and some other thing I probably wont use.
A Co-worker got vonage and it was a nightmare. He had NO phone service for 4 days when he was 1st setup. Saddly he had a death in the family at the time making it so much worse.
He says its ok, he didnt say much about outages, but he did say it was like talking on a cell for quality.
