How did the sheet rocking come out, Ryan?
Saturday - One showed at 9am - got a bedroom just about done. The same person from Friday showed .. at 1 again and helped with a couple ceilings on the main floor though he can't work without major direction so I'm not sure if he being there really helped at all.
Sunday - No calls back - No one showed - no sheet rocking took place - as I have just started, most of the boards need to be lifted and that just cant be done with just me and my inexperience. Maybe someone who has done it before on a large scale could.
Monday - Mom was going to help, though she canceled. I'll attempt to build a jig to hold the sheets up 3.5 feet on the wall to screw them on. Only rooms that I have done ceilings (2) will be attempted. The upstairs bedrooms can be attempted as the ceilings will be pine and done after the sheets have been hung.
Of the 4 people who offered to help - 2 actually showed - 1 was a REAL help, but at least the other attempted. 2 of the 4 are jobless and happy collecting, 1 was the lacklluster helper, but, again, at least he made an attempt.
Overall, I've been pretty discouraged with my local friends. Many offered to help, even a little, when I purchased this place over a year ago. To this day, I haven't seen 1 besides what I've seen this weekend. The only real helper came from this forum - proving the value of the friendships here.
I am really surprised and disheartened that anyone would offer to help - with this job or others in the past - and then just not show or not return my call. Why offer at all??
I'll be stuck doing the job - at this point I simply don't have the funds to hire a contractor. It will just take more time - hopefully I'll be done by March 3rd; kitchen cabinets show up.
Ryan,
Call around and see if you can rent a drywall hoist.
they're only a couple hundred bucks new so the rental can't be real high.
amazon link for drywall hoist.
the alternative is to tack a 2x4 across the seam area to create slot for the drywall to rest in while you screw it down.
then move the 2x4 to the next spot.
with respect to skim coating the walls, hire a professional.
if he's good, he'll make it look trivial, but trust me it isn't.
for ceilings, make a tee out of 2x4's to wedge the sheet rock against the ceiling.
use two or three if necessary.
it's a pain in the butt, but it works.
If I had time or you were closer I'd have come to help you.
as it is, I'm taking a break from working to type this.
The good news is sheet rock is pretty cheap, if you screw up a piece pull it down and do it over.
that and you kind hide most of your mistakes with skim coat. ( mind you I never made any mistakes that needing hiding
)
