Well I don't want to move people and fight fires. Don't they need someone to answer the phones and tell the firemen where to go? Heck, I could even cook breakfast when they get back. It's a bit of a stretch for me though. Oh and I can only work Monday through Friday, no weekends or holidays, of course.

I want a state/city job.

By the way, what's sick time/hours, Mark?

My vacation/time off is four weeks, that's it. More than some have, but if I get sick.........

I tried to introduce an employee paid, short term/long term disability plan here once, but it was not well received by the top dog.
The subcontractor I work for has vacation hours separate from sick time.
Plus 11 paid holidays a year.

But no more...working directly for the company, they have "paid time off"
where they roll everything into one pool. We definitely got screwed over
in that deal, but the rest of the benefits, pay, etc. were better than the
subcontractor, so all in all we are pretty happy.

yup that's the new policy effective 1-1-09 - they don't call it "vacation" time anymore - it's called PTO or paid time off

Now you know why I want a state/city job?

LOTS of companies have rolled vacation time/sick time into one. BUT many companies still offer some short term/long term disability, so that if you are out X number of days, the disability coverage kicks in and you aren't eating up your vacation days.

I call those "real companies." I don't work for one.

How many union places are left? Not too many.

Any union member who goes on strike in this economy has to be nuts. You never recoup what you lose while you're out with no pay. AND if they cut off your health insurance, while you are on strike, and they do, then you are doubly screwed.
