The machine is very simple. No rock salt or ice needed (mine anyway). The bowl which everything is mixed in, is hollow in the walls. The walls are filled with liquid, so you just pop it in the freezer the night before (or just keep it in freezer like I do so your ready to go anytime). Kind of like an ice pack in the shape of a bowl. This is what freezes the mixture. The bowl is placed in the machine, which spins the bowl, while a fixed palstic blade that fits snug inside the bowl does the mixing. Kind of a backward mixer. The mixture consists of sugar, whole milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract (this would make vanilla). Just turn on the machine, pour the mixture in the bowl, and in about 25 minutes you have ice cream that's more like soft serve. Put it in a container and throw it in the freezer for your tradition hard ice cream.
