Default Radar Detector?

Alright, so after my second ticket (Don't worry, I have zero points! The judge was nice) my mom has allowed me to purchase a Radar Detector. Do you guys have any suggestions? I've heard that different detectors work better in different places - if you guys use one, what kind is it and does it work well?

Price isn't that big of a deal, as long as it's not over $400 I should be fine.

Oh. And just out of curiosity - how many tickets have you guys gotten in your S2000s?

Get the Escort Passport 8500 hands down. It puts ya back a few hundred but there's no other out there that's worth it, including the Valentines. I work at Best Buy on the westside and Mobile Electronics is one of the departments I manage. Come in and pick one up, there's three different types to choose from - Blue, Red, and Cordless (Passport 8500 S50). Range from 308 - 346 in price, but like I said it's definitely worth it. Don't waste your time with anything else.

Ahh. So that's your Spa I always see double parked when I come by. =D. Do you have a Tibby too?

I come in pretty often, for games, and to own at the Guitar Hero setup.

And thanks for the advice.

Edit: What difference does X50 make - or is there no difference?

Yikes... If you're a mobile electronics expert, you're really putting your foot in your mouth with a comment like that about the Valentine One. In all actuality, there's no one radar detector on the market that is the best in everthing. The Valentine One picks up laser hundreds to thousands of feet before the Escorts not to mention it tells you the number of guns shooting at you along with what direction the radar/laser is coming from. The Escort is good at picking up radar from a bit farther away than the Valentine One, but it's a moot point as they both alert you before you're in range to get locked on usually. Overall, I think the Valentine One is better because it can give better protection for the worst kind of speed trap (laser) and it also gives the direction and number of guns. I suggest that everyone do research on products before they bash them or buy them.

I've heard mixed reviews about the ValentineOne, mostly about it picking up false signals. Yet, I've also heard that it is hands down the best radar detector on the market.

Does the Escort not detect LiDAR? If not, I'm definitely going with the Valentine. I think almost all the cops around here are switching to LiDAR, at least that's what both cops told me when they pulled me over.

Lidar is another name for Laser... and the Valentine One is the best for that sort of detection. I suggest going to their website to read up on it a bit...

Valentine One is the only way to go! I have had mine for about 4 years and in that time the only time I've gotten a ticket was in the beginning, when I had it turned off...BUSTED! I have never turned it off since! I've been on many road trips with it, and would not travel without it. A couple of years ago my dad was going on a road trip and asked to borrow it. He couldn't believe how helpful it was to indicate which direction signal was coming from, when to drive fast and spot the cops when present. He after bugging me from thereafter to borrow it, he finally bought his own. As with any, there are going to be "false alarms" (automatic doors/other laser/radio frequencies), but there are 3 settings to help minimize this.

Not getting busted is also up to the driver. If the cop is sitting on the other side of a hill and you are flying over the top doing 110mph, or coming around a turn where you cannot see what's on the other side then...You must learn where to push it and where not to. Radar/Laser does not go through mountains, up over hills! If you know how to use it, and when to be cautious...it works great.

I believe I've easily made a good $400 investment, cuz I would've spent that much in tickets and ^ insurance without it!

Oh, you can also send it back to them to retrofit any new technologies or upgrades. It will be the last radar you'll ever have to buy!

The power plug on my dad's broke (from changing between cars every week) on his way to Vegas. He called them while still driving. By the next morning a new plug was waiting for him at the front desk, free of charge. That's what you call customer service! I truely believe in this company!

Rick

PS- Like Brandon said, check the website Mike Valentine practically invented radar detectors.

Alright so I wanted you to get the Escort because I wanted you to spend the money in my box and help me get a slightly bigger bonus this month. So what? Still an excellent radar. Personally I'd rather have better range anyway, afterall the only reason you need to worry is if you're SPEEDING. Anyway, good luck on your research and choice. If you want a solid radar with great range, no power cords gettin in the way, and a nicely discounted price, come in and see me.

Nothing comes close to weeding out the false alarms than the valentine. The 1.8 version gives you 4 band identification lights as well as the direction arrows to tell you where to look. Mines pays for itself every other week and lets me drive fast without worries.
