So what work was MIke having done at Bill's shop ?? Was it just a valve adjustment or something more ??

Another question -- since apparently the HOnda valve retainers suck -- is there an aftermarket one that we could switch over to that would be better.

Final question -- Bill - was that the number 4 cylinder that had the problem ??

Ti retainers is not a solution. OEM retainers will last longer than titanium ones. The OEM ones get stressed if kept at high RPM's for way too long and at the slightest hint of an over-rev.

scroll down and read my replies on Ti retainers in this thread:

thanks, eliot. yeah... it was dumb of me to leave it there. but it kind of funny. when I pulled it out of the garage, I had windows rolled up so didn't hear anything until I got out, everyone was looking at me. I was wondering until I got out of RED.

Eliot I was there getting my baby all ready for fall colors Bill changed
every fluid in the car Brake,trans,diff,...etc We only saw what we did
because I wanted the valves adjusted. Everyone !!! please note
there wasn't any driving issues with the car no noise she was running perfect
The only thing I noticed was at highway speed the car wasn't pulling like
it usually does . I figured I would just change the plugs and clean my air
filter. didn't think much of it, till now Honda claims an over rev I swear
that I never did that. But when we start putting back together Bill's gonna
do some more testing and inspection. If it was an over rev I'll be very suprised
Its hard for me to imagine catching it !!! since that valve train spins at like
75 times a second. Anyway If nothing else I want to make everyone else
aware of this weakness so none of my friends and other club members find
out when its too late and the engine blows.

Eliot to answer your other questions.

1) Like Kane said Ti isn't the answer because it need to be replaced it will
then become a wear item for sure and depending on how hard you drive
it could be like every 15,000 miles . I had a long talk with Jeff the other
day he is very aware of this problem and is looking into two things with
his friend 1) the 04's have a different retainer not sure how different but he
is looking into that. 2) they want to make a retainer that is stronger and will
last 60,000 miles or more.

2) I'm not sure wich number cylinder it was but if your standing in front of the
car it would be the one closest to the windshield. I was wondering about cylinder
#4 also because Brian told me about the problems they where having with #4
in the first couple of years and people where blowing motors back then too .

It's number 4 cyl, but I'm certain it's total coincidence and not part of the original #4 cyl issue. Think that one was about cylinder wall scoring. If you guys want to organize it and pull some valve covers, I'd be glad to do inspections on as many cars as you want. My slave labor is limited right now, but for anybody who's willing to do the R&R I'd be up for the visual. Venomous S has an eye for this too so he'd be around as well.

Bill -- if I were to host a "valve retainer inspection day/bar-b-que" at my place on the weekend of 10/16 (either day, Saturday or Sunday - it is the weekend before fall colors), would you be available either of those days ??

On the slim chance that one of us has a bad retainer, it would be nice to catch it before fall colors.
