Default Route to Montauk from NJ

I'm planning on going to Montauk to star gaze with my wife this weekend. This will be a one-day round trip from NJ. Planning on taking Belt Pkwy and Rt 27 all the way to destination.

With that said, by the time we start heading back home, it'll be well past mid-night and I'm wondering if there's any area/neighborhood on the way back that I should avoid. I'm not familiar with the LI areas, so trying to be extra cautious.

Thanks all!

I would suggest taking the belt pkwy to the southern state and pick up route 27 all the way east where the southern state pkwy ends. Not too many “bad neighborhoods” to avoid on LI. Wyandanch comes to mind but if you need gas on the way home late at night you should visually be able to recognize where is not a good place to stop but chances are in your favor for a safe trip. LI is very safe.

Definitely no areas you need to avoid. Just do whatever Google Maps or Waze suggests.
