In winter of '97, with a brand new truck, I drove to FL with intentions of driving all the way to Key West for vacation. Got up to Miami Beach, then El Nino arrived. Let's just say, El Nino wasn't very welcoming. So that ended that plan. lol
I plan to go back again. Hopefully soon!

Just a heads up. You will be down here during hurricane season. While South Florida has been spared from severe weather it still rains like crazy but you usually get the sun and massive heat minutes later. Tampa has experience something like 22 days of non stop rain recently that has lead to to loads of flooding. Get yourself a good hurricane/weather apps and you should be ok.
If you are driving down and have time for a meet hit me up or check the SoFlo section. There is a steady meet every wednesday and last friday of every month. Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando guys meet often as well but I have not been in those parts for a meet.

yeah man I'm driving down tonight hopping for sun. the weather looks good for the keys clear sky's till Wednesday when I plan on leaving but lots of rain in Miami so who knows lol. I'm just winging it really so I got free time no plans set in stone yet. what part of FL are you in? I plan on setting something up to meet with bad1flip maybe we could all meet up.

My wife and I spent a week in Key west and loved it. Never set an alarm, planned everything as we went. Drank too much .. but you know ... 
We stayed at Casa Marina. But, we were doing a whole late honeymoon thing and wanted to stay at a nicer place, so it is probably not very cost effective for other stays. It was nice having its own sandy beach and two pools separated by a bar.
There are a lot of other cost effective options for hotels though. I found that overall for the type of place it is, Key West was not an expensive trip relative to many other places.
