While maggots are usually associated with rotting corpses swarming with flies, they have been used for medicinal purposes since the Napoleonic Wars.
Napoleon's field surgeons are thought to be among the first to notice that when maggots invaded open wounds that the incidence of infection and gangrene was much less. The maggots proved to be quite efficient at removing necrotic flesh and even excreted a solution that had antibiotic properties.
Doctors of today are returning to maggot therapy for the treatment of open wounds such as those caused by bedsores and diabetic complications; thus, a much reviled insect is contributing to improved health care. The referenced photo appears to be a case of a fly egg inadvertently getting in someone's eye and going unnoticed until the maggot emerged from the egg.

I think it's a Human Bot Fly, probably layed her eggs while the person was sleeping. I guess watching loads of the Discovery Channel has been good for something?
