Default 1 = 2 ??????

what's wrong with this picture?

Step 1: a and b > 0
Step 2: a = b
Step 3: a2 = ab
Step 4: a2 - b2 = ab - b2
Step 5: (a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
Step 6: (a + b) = b
Step 7: b + b = b
Step 8: 2b = b
Step 9: 2 = 1

theres division in the problem? 1 works until a+b=b

problem is impossible.....all positive numbers work until a+b=b

as do negative numbers

sooo no more numbers to use in this problem

Step 6 is where the problem starts:
just because x*0 = y*0 does not mean x = y

Damn it Unabageler, you're supposed to use "^" for exponents!

step 2 says a=b
so a-b=0
so you have divide by zero

To get from step 5 to step 6 you divide both sides by (a - b) which is zero - ergo division by zero

You'll pretty much never see a division sign in algebra

I miss those days in college when you get to do math & physics problems.
It's really satisfying to solve a really hard problem.
