I remember seeing a picture somewhere of an A-10 that had lost half its left wing and the entire left engine, and it STILL made it back to base and did a perfect landing

Dude... A-10 is a beast. If I remember rightly, the pilot sits in a titanium tub. The rest of it is just super-reinforced and crap.
