My cousin was friends with 2 of the passengers in that car. What are parents thinking these days giving their children cars like that to drive?

It's a terrible thing to happen, but young drivers need to know what they're getting into when they get performance machines. Because, lets face it, people have money and will buy their kids whatever they want sometimes, there's no stopping that. I learned to drive manual in my dad's eclipse spider turbo (before it blew up, unreliable POS) and then my first car was a del Sol S (105hp, w00t).

Now I'm 21 and bought an s2000 (with my money, thanks). While I did spend my early years in a slower car I'm still considered young by most peoples standards. I haven't had the car over 90, and that was once on a highway. I don't take turns like a race car driver unless I'm sure I can handle it.

It's all about teaching them to be responsible, I don't see a problem with an 18yo having an M5 if he's responsible with it.

Culling the herd. And, yes I have children, but its better that they don't have this clown around to drive.

When will paRents realize that their kids can't be trusted with cars like these?

I think most car companies should add some sort of hi speed lockout mode for these types of cars. Similar to the bugatti veyron. I don't think it would be something too difficult to add on.

Of course if you don't have kids or don't care to enter a passcode every time you start up your car, then there should be some sort of override ability.

But if you are going to hand your kids the keys to an m5, and NOT expect them to TEST the car out..... that's just plain stupid ignorance. Not saying its all the parents fault. It was the driver's stupid mistake. But kind of like a parent throwing a 16 year old boy in a room full of strippers and saying, "keep it under 60."
