5 reasons to hate mardi gras
I love NOLA, but I like it when its just semi busy. I would never go there for Mardi Gras, and keep one eye looking over my shoulder at all times. New Orleans is just about the most dangerous place in the country IMHO, although I have never strolled around Compton.
I feel far more at ease walking around just about any other major city at night, especially if you need to exit a well lit street like Bourbon or Charte.
I got into a couple hairy situations on my first trip there, but I was a group of four adult males and we wandered into a far corner of the quarter looking for a recommended local jazz club. We walked into a laundramat to ask if someone knew where this club was, the lady behind the counter said "Oh my god, you should not be down here. You are obviously tourists and should not be down here! Let me call you a cab." The way she said it and looked at us was kind of spooky.
We did not know what she was talking about, but later found that this part of the quarter was across the street from some major public housing complex and very dangerous. She told us where the club was since it was only a couple blocks we decided we would be fine. We ran into some unruly people that looked like they wanted to start something and ducked into the club. I honestly think these two guys were armed and wanted to rob us, don't know for sure but have the feeling, I just think they were trying to figure out how to rob four guys with just the two of them when we went into the club. We cabbed it back and the two guys were waiting outside.
I also met a guy at a party once who claimed he and a buddy met a couple girls at a bar during mardi gras and were invited back to their hotel which was not in the quarter. If you believe his story, the girls drove out to some deserted spot down by the river, pulled out guns, took their wallets and clothes and left them there. Dunno if I buy it but OK.

can you explain to me exactly what a "COONASS" is, how about "YANKEES"? What are these things you mention?

Hate it if you will, but in these times it sure does bring a huge help to the economy of New Orleans and the surroundings areas.
especially the baton rouge area
when i was younger it was fun because i would drink and have a good time and didn't have to worry my kids, but now i don't drink unless i'm at home or at a get together, you have to stay on your toes
Come to Biloxi for Mardi Gras then! Still large crowds and party atmosphere, but much more clean and preserved. We used to have three parades on Fat Tuesday, now, since Katrina, it's down to one large afternoon parade. Still, I had one of the best times this Mardi Gras, and after the parade we have the casinos that you can go to, or relax in your room that's right on the parade route.
