is a 50hr drive easy?
hi guys i'm set on buying a nice car from california. i wanna drive it back home to anchorage after i fly down there because shipping it up here is gonna cost $1800. i get a discounted plane ticket for $100 =). i pulled up driving directions on yahoo maps and the distance is going to be 3300miles@65 miles an hour and 50hrs total.
is this suicide? have any of u ever undertaken a similar task? opinions greatly appreciated. thanks!

It would cost you the same in time, hotels and chiropractors IMO. You'd be pushing it to drive 8 hours a day which makes it a whole week of 9 to 5 sitting in the one spot and the enjoyment of driving such a sweet car would disappear in no time. Oh and chuck in a heap of stone chips too
how about a compromise?
find out how much shipping is from Sacramento, Portland, or Seattle. (you don't mention where exactly you're picking it up from) then find out how much to fly back from whatever city you drive it to.
you'll get to enjoy your new S driving through some lovely scenery without killing yourself, and hopefully still save money overall on shipping... minus the expense of the return flight from whatever city you drive it to, and fuel costs too.

Better do it before winter hits! I drove from Chicago to Sacramento. I don't think it was 50 hours, but we did sight seeing on the way and it was fun. THe most I've driven myself in one stretch was 19 hours. That was painfull!
My cousin teaches at a school in Belize (Central America) and calls home New York (Albany). He drove down this year! Talk about a long ride. He, his girlfriend and thier dog all in a Chevy S10 single cab! They have a cap so the dog is going to be in the back but still it took them 10 days. Not to mention when they get to Belize they have to drive down this road for about 3 hours that is not paved and you have to travel at about 30 mph tops! So its completely doable.

Duuude - I drove the Alaska Highway in '92. Although I hear it's better now, I wouldn't count on averaging 65 mph. If it was a beater & you had nothing better to do, I'd say drive it , but if it's a good car & you're busy & the road is anything like it was in '92 - it's a bad idea. Consider your plane fare , expensive gas, wear on the car, danger to the car & potential difficult repairs, value of your time, and the price of chemical amusement in your decision.
Airplane ticket : $250
30 cents per mile at 3300 miles : $1000
Food for trip: $92
New Tire somewhere in Yukon: $220
Hitting a moose: priceless
That being said it's really beuatiful drive - half the fun of Alaska was getting there.

I took my S to Boston, from Miami, twice so far. Each time was a ride with only a pit-stops. My back was killing me, and I can only wish I didn't have to be on the schedule. Such long ride can be a lot of fun, but make sure you give yourself some time to rest.
