What a exciting way to start a day! Pants around your ankle on a outhouse toilet with the door opened, AND a bear charging in!

He was caught with his pants down — by a bear.

A 65-year-old Canadian man narrowly survived after being ripped from an outhouse toilet by a black bear during a recent camping trip.

Gord Shurvell of Winnipeg told CBC News he had left the outhouse door open to enjoy the morning views while camping out at Dunbar Lake near Sioux Lookout, Ontario, early Saturday.

"I'm sitting on the throne, and my feet are sort of up on the 'poopstool,' we call it,” when the bear charged in, he said.

"So I'm kicking at him to get away, but he grabbed my pants that were down around my ankles... and he just kept coming."

The hulking beast got ahold of the retired train conductor's neck and dragged him from the outhouse for about 50 feet, while he screamed for his life.

Shurvell's camping buddy, Daniel Alexander, heard his cries and came running to the rescue armed with a rifle.

Alexander shot the bear in the head, killing it.

"I knew what was going to happen, so I slowly took my face down and buried it right in the muskeg [boggy soil\], because I'm waiting," Shurvell told the Winnipeg Free Press. "Bang. And I felt the bear fall off me.

"Happy ending," he said.

Shurvell received stitches for claw wounds and bites on his back and neck, but his injuries weren't life-threatening.

Shurvell told the Free Press he's been hunting and fishing in the region for decades.

"I've been around in the bush... and I've never come this close to trouble with a bear," he said. "Of course, I never enticed them... I knew enough to respect them, let's put it that way."

Sioux Lookout police said there had been reports of bear activity in the area, but no word of attacks.
