Default 700c bike woes

Something really neat happened to me a few days ago!

I was on a typical ride Sunday morning when my fork snapped and I face planted right into the asphalt. On top of my fork breaking, my front wheel bent in the process so there's more money out... Has something like this ever happened to anyone? I bought the bike used about 3 years ago used and has never been an issue since then. My confidence in carbon fiber went down a little to say the least!

I don't know much about forks when it comes to buying a replacement - I tried going to a local bike store and the guy didn't even care that the fork broke on me, he just kept telling me "If you want a steel fork, you're replacing a $200 for a $60 part, that doesn't make sense!"

Just thought I'd share this. If anyone could give me some advice with buying a new fork, that'd be great!

The mods lead you astray when they moved this. I know it is the "Bike Talk" forum, but this is a motorcycle forum.

Off topic seems right to me.

Back to OT we go!

Also, are you racing or just pedaling around? I'd just get a steel fork and be done with it.

Yay! Sorry if the title may have been confused for a motorcycle!

But I was just pedaling around. I primarily use this bike for on-campus movement with occasional bike rides over the weekend. Thankfully I wasn't going downhill or on campus But I did order a replacement 1 1/8 steel fork from Fuji

Dammit Saki, you know I just read "700cc" and figured. . .

To the OP: good call just getting the steel part.

CF DOES have a wear limit, especially older CF. Don't lose your faith in CF altogether, but do understand you have to know the number of miles and miles/year on older CF bikes when you buy them used.

In general, smart call on getting the steel fork: it's the right kind of part for just durable campus cruising. Even on long cruises, I know a bunch of old-timers who prefer steel and titanium over cf and aluminum (although I'm not one of them).

What did you do about the hubs/wheels?

I haven't seen a CF fork broken like this. But I have seen a head tube snapped on a Trek CF road bike after a bad crash, and the rider was hospitalized after that ... it was a baaaaaaaaaaad crash.

It really depends on the quality / craftsmanship and construction of the CF parts / frame. And of course, micro fracture on the CF part after stress or accident would waken the part significantly.

Yeah, I bought the bike used a while ago. I knew the fork was CF but I didn't know about age. I tried going into bike stores and asking about replacement forks and they all seem disappointed that I'm not as passionate about bikes as they are - I don't mention how they're not passionate about cars like I am

I just got a replacement Bontrager front wheel. I didn't think about saving the hub...

And it's not the actual CF that broke, it's just the point where the stem was glued to the aluminium

Is it a name brand bike or a cheap Walmart special? There's a big difference.
