Default adobe photoshop or illustrator?

i have both on my computer, but i dont really know how to use either one very well. if i want to prepare labelled pictures and photos for publications, which program is better to use and why? or are the 2 meant to be used in conjunction?

you would use illustrator to do that stuff.... and yes they both are to be used in conjunction... along with imageready for animated stuff..

photoshop is more for graphics and drawing and stuff like that.. illustrator is more for making pamphlets, and magazine spreads and such..

Actually, you'd use Photo Shop for that. Illustrator is more for original image creation while Photo Shop is more for editing and such. (InDesign is good for publication set up, magazine spreads, etc, if you stay in the Adobe suite.) Of course, you can do it with either app, but for what you stated, you want to use Photo Shop.

if your looking to do layout anything.. none of the programs you listed are good for layout... (except for the InDesign Saki mentioned) Quark is the way to go for layout, but you'll need Photoshop for sizing and etc of pictures. I rarely use Illustrator for anything other than making logo's and things that need to be vector art vs raster images.

It can be accomplished with either, and it will be easiest in the program you are most comfortable with.

If he's only wanting to prep a photo for publication and not actually do any of the layout per say.... then Photoshop.. I think I misread some info.. but yea.. Illustrator is NOT good for photo manipulation.

Photoshop is used to manipulate images (usually bitmap) while illustrator is generally used to create images (usually vector).
